A fat eighth measures 9'' x 22''. It's an eighth-yard of fabric just as is a piece measuring 4½'' x 44''. But a chunk is sometimes more useful to quilters than a strip, which is why this is a popular precut. When shopping for fat eighths, ask your local shop if they are willing to cut fat eighths from the bolt if you don't find what you need in their precut selection.
